Temporal Ontology in Ecology

چکیده
Theoretical applications of time and temporality remain a key consideration for both climate scientists the humanities. By way extending this importance, we critically examine Timothy Morton’s proposed “ecological awareness” alongside Slavoj Žižek’s “parallax view.” In doing so, article introduces “past-present parallax” in order to contest that, while conceptions past are marked by “lack,” equally, our relations Nature grounded an ontological incompleteness, contingency. This novel approach presents ecological awareness that remains temporally attuned impasses inconsistencies which frame in/with Nature.

Temporal ecology in the Anthropocene.
Two fundamental axes - space and time - shape ecological systems. Over the last 30 years spatial ecology has developed as an integrative, multidisciplinary science that has improved our understanding of the ecological consequences of habitat fragmentation and loss. We argue that accelerating climate change - the effective manipulation of time by humans - has generated a current need to build an...
متن کاملFactors Affecting Ontology Development in Ecology
Few ontologies in the ecological domain exist, but their development can take advantage of gained experience in other domains and from existing modeling practices in ecology. Taxonomies do not suffice because more expressive modeling techniques are already available in ecology, and the perspective of flow with its centrality of events and processes cannot be represented adequately in a taxonomy...

It is often assumed that the semantics of temporal expressions is directly related to the linear time concept familiar from high-school physics—that is, to a model based on the number line. However, there are good reasons for suspecting that such a conception is not the one that our linguistic categories are most directly related to. When-clauses provide an example of the mismatch between lingu...

"Two weeks later, Bonadea had already been his lover for a fortnight."-Robert Musil, Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften. A semantics of temporal categories in language and a theory of their use in defining the temporal relations between events both require a more complex structure on the domain underlying the meaning representations than is commonly assumed. This paper proposes an ontology based on su...
متن کاملTemporal Ontology in Natural Language
A semantics of linguistic categories like tense, aspect, and certain temporal adverbials, and a theory of their use in defining the temporal relations of events, both require a more complex structure on the domain underlying the meaning representations than is commonly assumed. The paper proposes an ontology based on such notions as causation and consequence, rather than on purely temporal prim...
